Why Choose Us?
What is the difference between a DogSmarts trainer and other
trainers?
In the past, many trainers have been asked to come aboard, but for one reason or another, didn’t
fit into our high expectations as a training service. When we say “client satisfaction and delivering
results is our number one priority,” we mean it! Few people have the resume it takes to fill the
shoes of a DogSmarts dog trainer. We’ve worked with many that have shown potential but have
also had to tell many that it just isn’t the right fit. We only do this to keep client satisfaction and
results at a high level. It takes a certain image and level of professionalism to create a brand. As of
2011, we have the team that it takes! Want to learn more about that team? Click –here-.
All we can really say while keeping this on a professional level is that not all trainers are created
equal and please do your homework before hiring a trainer or training service. We’ve tried to put
as much information on this website by way of client feedback, biographies and even videos that
demonstrate the professionalism of our trainers. Our trainers are always available to interview
for your job. In fact, we promote potential clients meeting us before committing to anything!
Be aware of what places charge and be sure that it’s commensurate to experience and most
importantly, what results they can achieve. You can find fees anywhere from a couple hundred to
a couple thousand within this industry, and many times, the trainers have the same background
and experience. Sometimes the seasoned veterans who have been training for many years and
have created a name within the community, are even cheaper than some of these other services.
Are you one of the many dog owners who needs help with aggression? Every place advertises that
they can help, but few can. Dig deeper and find the information you need to make an educated
decision. We’ve seen it both firsthand and through the words of clients who only learned this
after the fact. A quick example as to something to watch for: A trainer who has aggression
issues and fighting amongst THEIR OWN personal dogs but turns around and
charges a client a steep price for aggression work? Does that make any sense to you?
You see, there are no regulations by any state to control what is taught within this industry.
A ‘certified’ trainer can be just about anyone and a ‘professional certified’ trainer just means they
charge you for their service. We can’t stress enough for anyone searching for assistance with their
dogs to please do your homework before making a decision. A place that offers training but has
no biographies for the potential client to read should raise a red flag. If they had the background
that backs up claims of charging what they do, wouldn’t one promote, if not flaunt it? Our
Training Director was recently interviewed (2011 Tails Magazine, St. Louis) and this was a topic of
discussion. Please read the question & answer below:
Q- I just brought a new puppy into my home and I want to start training her right
away. There are so many trainers out there: I’m overwhelmed with choices. Can
you give me some tips on things I should look for in a trainer?
A- I personally would tell you to do your homework. Read about their
knowledge, schoolings, their experience and most importantly, the results
they achieve. If a biography stating much of this information is not easily
accessible, there’s probably a reason it’s not easily accessible. Do they
know how to train using many approaches? Or are they going to make your
dog fit into their skill set? Do they belong to any professional associations?
If so, what did they have to do to become a member? What credibility can
accompany your chosen trainer? Do they belong to the better business
bureau? Any chamber of commerce? As these are not industry related, they
do show the professionalism of your prospect. What do their personal dogs
look like? Things of this nature can help you make an informed decision.
Unfortunately, there are no state regulations for any form of studies so it’s
very easy for anyone to consider themselves a ‘professional’ or ‘certified’
trainer. Trust me; you want to do your homework!
It’s unfortunate that there is no resource for regulations within the dog training field. When
a personal fitness trainer was asked about pricing, he went on to educate the clients that it all
depended on his level as a trainer. His Master’s Degree and levels of certifications within the
personal training field had him listed at a “master trainer” level, and the price for his services
were higher than those of a colleague that didn’t have the same levels completed even though they
both worked for the same company. Hmm… That sure seems to make sense!
The staff that we have put together now includes trainers who have not only competed in canine
sports at national levels, but trainers who have won at the national level; trainers that have been
through intense educational training and trainers that have been training for many years. A
head instructor from a nationally known school for dog trainers is on staff while others are local
industry experts and have testified under oath on canine behavior & psychology. Others have
trained and placed police K9 dogs and still another has had Municipal & Circuit court judges
credit their training programs.
We feel we have priced our training programs accordingly to what WE have accomplished and
what WE can help you accomplish. All we can do to help the dog training industry is to be able
to justify what it is we’re doing and why we’re doing it. If you’re in the market for a trainer, we
wish you nothing but the best of luck in finding the right fit for you. If we can be of assistance
in helping you locate that right fit, please don’t hesitate to contact us. There are plenty of dogs
to keep every trainer and training service with a work load, we just want you, the dog owner, to
be educated and advised on the variety of things you will find when beginning your search. As
always, we wish you the best of luck in all your dog training adventures!
